How to Stop a Crappie "getaway" Amazing Crappie Fishing Tips Here!

Old School Crappie Fishing Family Secrets

You'd be shocked how many crappie get away from fisherman all over the country after the fish have been hooked. I'm willing to bet it happens to you at least a few times every time you go fishing (and some of these subtle bites you never even knew you had). Here are our surefire crappie fishing tips to limit your crappie "getaways"

TIP#1 Match your line color to the water your are fishing in. As a rule of thumb the cleaner the water is the more you need to disguise your line.

TIP#2 Don't try and "muscle" the fish after you set the hook...unless you want to brag about the fish lips hanging on your hook.(you can sit around and speculate how big the "rest of the fish" was!) Instead, you've got to wait to set the hook. Crappie like to swim a little before trying to swallow... give it a few seconds, then give a quick jerk to set the hook. Once thats done , it is a give and take process to tire the crappie out. Don't ever pull hard. This one of the most important crappie fishing tips you will learn.

TIP#3 I always use a net when I am bringing crappie into the boat. If you get a big slab on your line you could rip the hook right out of his tender lips just by pulling the fish into the boat without a net.

TIP#4 Use a rod with a lot of action. Set the drag so that you can give a little line before you rip the fish's mouth off. If all you get is are fish lips, you might have your drag set too tight. Just loosen it up.

TIP#5 Wear him out before you bring him in. Think of it as a "tug of war" match! You Gotta pull hard then let up.... a reel there..stop a second.. wear him out. You've got to find a balance on your drag settings. You want to set a little tension to tire out the crappie-but not to much so the line breaks. After he's worn out, you can put him in the net without to much resistance.

Can any one give me any tips on crappie fishing?

    • Bass Catcher says:

It all varies from day to day, hour to hour.

Key…find trees or some other sort of cover. Also, fish where crappie ARE, if a body of water is not known as a crappie water, it will not produce much crappie.

I am a Crappie fisher and this is the way I catch them:

The best time to catch Crappie is in the spring when they go to shallow water to spawn. Look for trees and brush in the water. A good indication is the trunk of a tree reaching out of the water on the bank. Fish around logs lying in the water. Crappie are very picky. You have to go to them….they won’t come to you. Some people use a jig but if you want to catch Crappie use a MINNOW. Drift along, quietly, dropping the minnow down among the tree tops and brush. IF Crappie are there, they will hit the minnow immediately. You have to vary the depth also. They will not come UP or DOWN t bite bait. When they bite do NOT jerk the pole up. When the bobber goes under just pull up gently but rapidly to get them out of the brush. Notice their mouth……it is VERY tender, a translucent membrane that tears easily. That is he reason for not jerking like you would a bream.

Second, when not in spawning season, fish the deeper water. If in a lake use a fish finder and find the original river channel. Look for junk under the water such as brush and, again, drift along. When fishing for any fish, you have to go to them. They will NOT come to you. This is especially so with Crappie. Next…….patience.

Fishing is for enjoying and when I go, I like to catch fish but just being on the water and drifting along enjoying the view and relaxing is wonderful for your mental health. My son is a bass fisherman and he frantically casts as fast as he can to cover all the nooks. NOT for me. I, at times, will lay my pole down, drift and just relax.

Good luck and good fishing. Pops

Looking for crappie fishing tips for Texoma, Eisenhower park. No boat, just off the docks. Lures, bait, point?

    • girls luv camping 2 says:

Crappie fishing is best in fall and winter, when fish tend to school in large numbers and concentrate around boat houses, submerged trees, creek channels, and brush piles. While minnows are the bait of choice, crappie are caught on a variety of jigs. The spring spawning season, when they move in shallow, is also an excellent time to fill your creel.

i am going fishing in Cincinnati Ohio and need some crappie fishing tips

    • DjBird420 says:

Crappie can only hit a bait at or above eye level.
Never try fishing on the bottom for crappie.
Small crank baits and spinner baits work but a LIVE(hook it through the back just under the dorsal fin) shiner minnow under a cork with a gold aberdeen hook is best.
Put out a few lines set at different depths when you catch a couple change all the depths close to the ones that caught and you should be in good shape.
Crappie like to school near laydowns and other underwater structure.
If you fish at night try suspending a light above the water and fish below it.
Crappie have tender mouths so don’t get to aggressive on the hook set.

I fish from the bank too I have been using a great lure for bass its called a Heddon Pop~N~ Image (its a topwater lure) there are pics of it and a few bass I have caught the last few days on my 360 page in my blog

Bream I use worms or a trout fly tipped with worms

      Catfish
Use natural forage fish in the places you fish, like cut shiners, shad , or bluegill. If fishing for flathead catfish use live bait, like live bream , for channel cats and blue cats use cut bait, I often catch channel cats on a bobber not all cats are bottom feeders.

Chicken livers , and shrimp are also good baits for catfish
